More Splining

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation

Spilning pass on the body and limbs is nearly there, next I am moving on to work on the facial expressions, fingers, and lip sync.

Any feedback is welcome.

    Hey Avner,

I like the stuff you sent my regarding Mike Walling’s work method. I’d see that before but it had been a while. Your pass with just the torso was a nice focus on the core/central line of the character. Unfortunately, I’ve been particularly busy lately so response time is limited and later than usual. If you want to try following this suggestions most can be probably accomplished in the graph editor.

You have some nice reversals in here that I think you could push more. He turns to us on (frame 30) and sighs, nice, he turns back (45-50) afterwards as if turning inward. But then immediately reverse the other way not allowing us to read this more ‘introspective’ pose. I believe the reversal could happen later as he starts forward (70). You could push the next reversal (104) while he says “huge section”. Right now its just his head that is tilting screen left. The spine could tilt a little more in the same direction at that point.

I believe this pose could push further (104-118) into the arms-down angry pose (145) with him looking off screen left instead of at the audience. The pose on “perfect as it is” (225) should expand, moving hold, with arms opening slightly, hands fingers appearing to reach as pose continues, head rising and tilting along the line of action more.

The eyes are too slow (268-304). Needs eye darts instead of soft transitions between eye positions. He should search around before saying “rewrite what is already perfect”.

I like the release and deflation on “rewrite”. Nice release after the build-up.
