What does a tennis ball, billiard ball and a golf have in common?

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation

Absolutely nothing! hehehehehe Today, as part of my attempt to push my fundamental animation skills, I thought it will be challenging to try and animate three different bouncin balls (this time with out having a look at the Animator Survival Kit that pretty much tells you where to set your keys). For reference I bounced these three balls on a concrete surface. The tennis and billiard balls were quite easy to block in terms of key poses and timing, the golf ball however was a bouncy basterd! I...

Final revision for March 11 second club

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation

Ok, so after the inspiring class I had last weekend I decided to tackle this March piece I submitted for the 11 Second Club one more time. This time I went for the “less is more” approach. I tried to act within the poses or in other words just simplify them. The amount of gestures my character did was ridiculous so I toned it down as well as adding subtle attention to the eyes and the hands. Flip that bouncing ball

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation, Flipbook

The more I spend time working in Flipbook, the more I realize and understand how hard this animation business actually. The main problems I have are my terrible drawing skills, it seems like it’s taking me forever to get things right in terms of proportion, squash and stretch. The other thing I am struggling with is the fact I don’t feel like I...

Jump revision

Just a quick update for the Flipbook jumping test I started a few days ago. The timing could be pushed a little further I suppose. I incorporated Amrit’s suggested poses into this pass, they look pretty good, I think he helped me pushing it further (and also taught me how much I need to learn and practice my poses more!). Anyhow, here is the...

Oh what a class

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation

The last two days were very very special and inspiring for me.  I attended the Andrew Gordon animation workshop and it was everything I expacted it to be and more. Learning and going through the fundamentals of animation is always good, but doing it with someone from Pixar makes it so much better. It was brilliant to look at examples from Andrew’s personal experiences. Overall it was an enjoyable two day class which left me not only overwhelmed but very hungry to do animation.
