Vine Swing Third Pass

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation, Flipbook

Last night I looked at my swing test again, things were starting to feel tiny little better in terms of the way the character moves, but there were still issues with the energy and the momentum.

This time around, I was trying to give more meaning and contrast to what’s taking place in the shot.

I received some really good and valuable feedback (thanks Jason and Daniel) which helped me to think more about the elements that can give this test that little bit of extra touch.

One of the main things I had to figure out was the character’s purpose to jump to the other side. Once I figured out why he is jumping, everything else was much easier to figure out.

The next thing I did was watching some Tex Avery animation! :-) Watching cartoons always inspire me to think creatively, it’s brilliant.

After that I doodled around until 3:30am, sketching poses, testing what they look like and eventually ending up with a a whole new shot! :-)

Although I am knackerd and my wrists are sore from drawing for so long, I had a blast! ;-)

hey man… very cool test!! I see the Cartoony Tex avery look to this :D it’s incredible how much cartoons we watched when we were kids and now we look back to analise them and get even more amazed! :D

the first part is very good.. and i see you got the character smaller so he could really perform full screen.. so that’s good.. has a meaning and antic what he will do.. still bothering me the swing… dunno if it’s the spacing or the timing… the distance.. i am not really sure.. i would look at some refference and try to nail it cuz so far the rest is very good! :D

PS: try to apply the “Cartoony Zip” exit at the end.. usually you work out your spacing and strech making the character exit in 4 or 6 frames.. in this case wich is more cartoony i wouldn’t put more than 4 frames.. and no less than 2 frames (what you have now) .. cuz it’s too fast we don’t see it.. and it doesn’t need to be to slow also.. it’s a balance so we could feel it and not see it..

    all the best! :D

This is a billion times better than the last update. Very nice work man. The only thing that I can possibly point out is that the rope grows a bit when he pulls it back, and then shrinks again once he’s swinging. OTherwise the character himself is looking really good man! Keep it up :)
