It’s been a very long time since I wrote something that is worth reading on my blog.
So apart from letting all you all know I am still alive, I wanted to share with you an experience I had last night after I was watching the film “Waltz With Bashir”.
I can’t remember the last time a movie made me feel so touched, moved, overwhelmed and confronted all at the same time. This 2D flash animated feature was beyond any expectation I had in my mind prior of watching it.
In a nut shell the movie is about the journey of the film maker to retrieve his memory lost after the first Israel Lebanon war in 1982.
There were a bunch of things I really liked about the movie, however the main thing that stood out to me was the story. Half way through the film you forget you are watching an animated film because you get sucked into it so much. The graphic images and scenarios that were being told make you realize how much you live in a bubble in comparison to what other people have to deal with as their daily routine.
Ari Fulman’s (the film maker) choice of using animation as the medium of telling his story was spot on. Even though some of the visuals and stories told were very intense, the surreal treatment and visual interpretation of them eases you into a well built climax at the end.
At the end of the movie I was speechless, it left me baffled and I couldn’t speak to anyone. It gets you thinking about life, and whether you do anything to prevent any of the things the movie discuss.
If any of the things I mentioned above sound too vague to you, I apologize. Everything that was written above was written with the intention to invite and encourage you all to watch without spoiling the experience.
I’d like to hear back from you and start a conversation about the film in case you decide to check out the movie.
Synopsis:
One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari Folman about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there’s a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can’t remember a thing anymore about that period of his life.
