A Few Words of Advice

Posted by Avner Engel in Animation, Animation Mentor

It was brought to my attention that some of my work from Animation Mentor is on someone else’s reel. I don’t know if I should feel flattered because someone found my work good enough to copy or pissed off because they stole it and claimed it as their own. Either way, I want to mention a few words of advice:DON’T STEAL OTHER PEOPLES WORK!

It is fine to use existing animation and recreate it for your own learning purposes, but keep that to yourself and at home. Don’t put it on your reel. This particular person went to the extent of copying not only my animation frame for frame, but Svetla Radivoeva’s as well, and he even recreated the planning! Funny enough, her amazing shot opened the Animation Mentor 2010 showcase.

The animation industry is small, word gets around quickly and by taking something you didn’t make and claim it as your own, can really hurt your chances in landing a job anywhere.

Sorry to hear about the theft of your work! You’re right though, it is a small industry and this will no doubt bite him/her in the butt big time one day. I wish a whole lotta bad karma onto them :P

Ha!! He went a step ahead and plagiarized the entire DreamWorks (Kung Fu Panda) logo animation too! :D

On a serious note, this is sick to the core! I too had been a victim of such an act (in my case, he didn’t copy it frame for frame, but he used my entire animation) and I know how it feels.

Don’t really know when they’ll learn work ethics!

Hey Av, good you for taking action. You might have saved this guy from getting any more disgrace.
But I did want to see the copied reel for amusement :(
